As a service to the community we will be recording meetings when able and posting them online. A recording of the 4/30/08 meeting is attached below. I apologize for the quality of the recording - I’ll be looking to get a microphone that will improve the recording. 35 minutes into the recording is the beginning of the public comments, where I asked if the taxpayers could be involved in the process from the beginning. 

School Board Meeting 4/30/08

Some brief comments from the selectmens meeting on 4/15/2008:

Don Clifford will be the “eyes” of the selectmen for watching the town building contract. He will report directly to the selectmen. He is not looking to directly interact with the contractor. The selectmen think this is a good idea and approve. Once plans come out, they will be looked over by Don and the Selectmen. Plans are not currently available. Footings may be added by the end of the week.

There was a discussion of having a formal process for bidding out contracts in the future. It was decided to research it further and come up with concrete proposals to discuss.

Strafford Taxpayers Minutes, 04-14-2008

Following are some notes from the school board meeting on 4/9/2008. Official minutes should be out next week.

Some items of interest at the 3/26 SB meeting…official minutes will be available on the school website sometime.

1. The Energy Committee (Dan Phelan and Bill Vance in attendance) requested to be involved in all future planning of a school building and to work with whatever committee is created. They discussed how using unit ventilators in the classrooms would be a cheaper solution than what was proposed in the $11.2M plan (numbers to follow in a few weeks). Mr. Jenisch added that the school uses unit ventilators, is upgrading some each year, and that the new ones work great. We discussed a bit how Special Sessions can be requested, but that judges don’t like to approve them.
2. The new principal search will start ASAP; the SB is looking for a couple community volunteers to help.
3. CBNA contract is up for renewal this summer (5 yr contract).
4. The future of the School Renovation bond was discussed. The SB wants to wait until a new principal comes on board (May?) before making decisions or forming a new committee. It sounded as if they are satisfied with the current plan and will put it forward again, but that decision will come later. We are not under any contract with Bonnet, Page, and Stone.
5. I reported to the SB that I had talked to both “yes” and “no” voters over the past few weeks to see if there was a possibility of finding middle ground for the school renovation. From all people told me, I do believe compromise is possible, but the SB would need to come down in price and scope to bring more “no” voters on board, yet provide enough improvement to keep the “yes” voters as well.

The following two letters were submitted to the Strafford School Board in response to events over the last year, and in the last week in particular.

Although the school renovation project got voted down at the school meeting, a motion was made to reconsider so there will be another vote on 2/12 at 7pm at the Strafford School.  Please be there, and spread the word.
